About this deal

When Hugo dies and Pat rebuffs her proposal of marriage, Lucinda receives comfort from Hugo’s eccentric brother Paul.

Lucinda spurns the love of a distinguished family friend, Tony Duff, to marry the dashing aide-de-camp to the Governor, Hugo Brayford. Director John Gauci uses every trick in the book to cover the relative lack of budget, cutting corners by dropping shots and employing corner sets and very basic multi-camera set-ups ( clip one). Some terminology that may be used in this description includes: First Edition In book collecting, the first edition is the earliest published form of a book. The mini-series was produced in-house shortly before tax concessions gave a boost to television drama budgets, benefiting mini-series like All the Rivers Run (1983), Bodyline (1984) and A Fortunate Life (1985). His siblings included the potter William Merric Boyd (1888–1959), painters Theodore Penleigh Boyd (1890–1923) and Helen à Beckett Read, née Boyd (1903–1999).As well, various social conflicts are expressed in her life when she marries into a titled family and her wealth and prestige give way to the changing times. Then World War I cripples and disfigures Hugo, and there's irony in Lucinda becoming the one who adopts marital infidelity as a way of life- and that with Huge's closest friend. These novels—particularly Lucinda Brayford (1946) and the Langton quartet, beginning with The Cardboard Crown (1952)—were chronicles too of the decline of the genteel and aristocratic tradition. Lucinda's life of ease is replaced by hardship when Hugo takes her to England just before the First World War. The married couple live happily in England until Hugo begins making excuses for long absences from Lucinda.

Hugo fears what a divorce could do to his reputation and to the considerable allowance he gets from Lucinda’s family. Therefore, when Lucinda, the youngest daughter of Frederick, is to be married to a titled young gentleman from England, Hugo Brayford, an aide-de-camp for a term in Australia, the family excitedly anticipate a new feather in their social cap. The family's social ambitions lead to conflicts between Lucinda and her parents over the attentions of Tony Duff.

Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work.

In a sense, the novel is the biography of Lucinda Brayford; descriptions of the generations preceding hers serve to establish the context of her life.

If you are a fan of the Brontes, Henry James, Edith Wharton, or any late 19th-early 20th C literature dealing with class, relationships, manners or society, you will enjoy this novel.

As an achievement in story-telling, I found the Australian section more entertaining, as Fred Vane achieves his goal of poverty to riches, while his wife lives down the ignominy of her early married life by purchasing a place in the society she covets. The novel begins in the mid-1800’s, in an England ruled by tradition and a proud aristocracy, and concludes in England during World War II, with tradition replaced by expediency and pragmatism and the aristocracy besieged in their rather depleted manors by businessmen and industrialists. These would-be aristocrats were parvenues, nouveaux riches brought to their station by ambition rather than by history, breeding, and education. He gambles away her money as well as his own and refuses to give up his mistress of ten years, Mrs Fabian Parker (Virginia Rooksby), despite the fact that he and Lucinda now have a child, Stephen (played by James Adamson and Stephen Oldfield). He was intensely involved in family life and took a keen interest in the development of his nephews and nieces, and their families, including potter Lucy Beck (b.You'll also get access to more than 30,000 additional guides and more than 350,000 Homework Help questions answered by our experts.
