Yes, you can just slide the old console in and secure it with the tab (see Jon's video below), but the two-part body is held together with three screws and a small spacer which can be removed to make the grip fit perfectly with a regular Switch.

I bought the neogrip hoping it would feel like the regular joy con grip that comes with the switch, but with a screen in the middle. Slide the second joy con onto the Switch OLED main unit to allow the NeoGrip to attach securely to the system.The extra tab feels like a minor inconvenience with the potential to get lost fairly easily, but it holds everything appropriately secure. I find myself gladly playing with the snap grips with easy transitions between the Switch dock and the EDC carry case on the go. The white locking piece could be a concern for some as it can be easily lost, though in my experience it has never fallen out of its slot.

Neither of those options really bother me because the grips slide on and off easily while still feeling very secure. Seems like a not-minor detail of a review, but something that would be left out of an advertisement.The trigger grips are the obvious winner as they make the Switch feel like a premium controller, which is a dream come true for a handheld gamer. It should be noted that the larger grips could press against any cables that come out of your Switch dock, but if that poses a concern you can easily slide the grips off when you want to dock the system.

It's a minor difference that is barely noticeable in the flesh or when you slide it into the dock, but one that you'll definitely notice if you try to put the newer console into a grip designed for the original. One very notable feature of the NeoGrip is that it still allows the Switch system to be fully dockable. It makes handheld play infinitely more comfortable and its quality construction and materials are an admirable match for the console. These grips are by far the best on the market for solving this issue, Thierry unobtrusive, let the device retain full functionality and add immensely to the experience.

For a large game controller with a screen, the Wii U Gamepad is so much more comfortable to hold for long periods of time.
