About this deal

This is Farm Animal set-up is one of my favourite Tuff Tray Ideas for Toddler Sensory Play as it uses Edible Mud making it a Taste-Safe option for our little ones.

If you’re unsure of what exactly ‘sensory play’ is and how it can benefit your kid, it’s worth a quick read of, What is Sensory Play and Why is it Important? They are so versatile and use items we already have at home so they take barely any preparation time. We have a duck pond with water (and a bit of blue food colouring), muddy pig puddle (cornflour, cocoa, and water), green coloured rice for the field, Rice Krispies and oat mix for the chickens and polenta for the farm track.

They are large enough to contain all the mess your baby or toddler will make as they explore the sensory materials you prepare for them. I blog about living with grief after child loss, crafts, days out and the little moments of family life. The Giraffes Can't Dance tuff tray was created using different coloured rice for the Giraffe (dyed using food colouring) and salt for the moon. For the rainbow, mix PVA glue, shaving foam and different food dyes together to make different coloured puffy paint . Once this was all set up and put into place I then added toys that I already had in our home such as animals, Happyland people, a fire engine, and other little bits.

As time went on Esther started to notice the flashcards and the Big Jigs animals with words on the back. They then set about playing – they used some empty fruit boxes to collect the vegetables, dairy produce and fruit. Again, there is lots of learning potential behind this tray including motor movements, mark-making and imagination play. As with our standard sized mats, they're great for a change of scenery to encourage new types of creative and imaginative play.It was fairly easy to clean up too, as we just tipped everything into the bushes and then stood the tuff tray on its side and used a watering can to rinse it down. I have always had good imagination and love arts and crafts so when I first heard of Tuff Trays early last year I was quite excited. We live in a tiny village surrounded by farms and so we see lots of tractors and trailers every day. Place coloured bowls around the edge of the tray for children to sort, compare and count the different coloured eggs.

This Cereal, Farm Animal Tuff Tray set-up is nice and easy to clean up with a quick sweep of the floor at the end. The clouds really set the scene for the sky, and they were so easy to do, literally spread out some cotton wool. Or perhaps something educational that can help your little one practice their colours, counting, vehicle recognition, and fine motor skills in preparation for writing. Sophie and Thomas loved playing with the animals and with the different textures of dry food making up the farm areas. I will be doing some more tuff trays along side popular children's books in the next couple of months. This simple farm based tuff tray idea gave the toddler a good hour of fun play and took mere minutes to set up. We are trying to avoid too much screen time here, but need to keep a 3 year old and a 9 month old happy. I’d quite like to try filling the tuff tray with oobleck next time so Sophie can try jumping and standing on it.

I hid the milk, butter and cheese pictures underneath and sat some of the children’s toy cows on top. We are finishing off our farms week this week and have had our Tuff spot farm world out every day since Thrusday! It’s brilliant for setting up small world play scenes, for providing a flat surface for art activities or helping keep messy learning activities contained. I'm Louise, mummy of three - Jessica, forever six, who was born with half a heart and lives on in mine; and heart-healthy Sophie (born 2013) and Thomas (born 2018).I have found that setting up my Tuff Tray with fun toddler sensory play activities, like these messy farm animal play ideas, has been great for getting my kids happily playing independently while I grab a much-needed cuppa! I have compiled a list of some of my favourite messy play tray ideas from other tuff tray lovers with instructions on how to create the playtrays! My original idea was to create an industrial, crop type of farm on one Spot and a country, animal farm on the other but in the end we had a mix of the two on each. Pop the animals in different places around the tray, set up the vehicles in each field and let your child loose! Focusing on endangered animals was really nice as we were able to have some lovely learning conversations about what endangered means and other areas of conservation.
