You can of course use your smartphone and the DJI Mimo app as a form of remote control, and it works brilliantly thanks to simple controls, big screen viewfinder and solid wireless connection. Using the app also enables livestreaming.
US customers may have extra concern about transmitting data to DJI, as the company is on the Treasury Department's Entity List due to allegations of the company's involvement in digital surveillance of the Uyghur ethnic minority. If we’re honest, while it is a little sad to see the modular design seemingly abandoned, the Action 3 is easier to manage and more capable. The only sacrifice is the larger size and weight, but even then it still has the GoPro beat. (A side-note is that the Insta360 ONE RS manages to be both modular and waterproof, but needs three elements.)

Tested in a -20° C (-4° F) laboratory environment while recording 1080p/30fps video in normal video mode with Enhanced Image Quality disabled, EIS disabled, and the screens off, and should be used for reference only. I used the Mimo app to update firmware during testing and it worked like a charm. The app also supports file transfer to your phone, and includes some editing templates to spice up your footage before sharing. While the front touch display is cramped at 1.4 inches, the main screen is much more spacious, measuring 2.25 inches. With both screens sporting a pixel density of 326PPI, they're plenty sharp, and they also get nice and bright for easy outdoor viewing. I recommend turning off push notifications, however, as DJI has unfortunately opted to use Mimo as a delivery system for product announcement and sale notifications. I hate seeing ads on my phone's screen, and camera apps shouldn't add to the noise.
This makes it much easier to detach and reattach the camera and swap between mounts, avoiding the fiddly process of having to screw your camera to securely mount it – and unscrew it when you need to move it. Add the protective frame that comes supplied with the standard bundle and you can even mount the camera on its end, to shoot vertical footage for social media. The DJI Osmo Action 3 has a few things going for it that competing GoPro Hero cameras don't match, including the front touch LCD, a 52-foot waterproof rating, and easy-on-easy-off mounting system. Battery life is another strong point, with good runtimes, a resistance to overheating, and a sensible charging case accessory as marks in its favor.Also illustrated in the above video is horizon leveling, a feature introduced in the Action 2. This keeps footage looking steady, compensating for tilts at up to 45-degree at 4K resolution, and able to handle 360-degree rotation at 2.7K without so much as a tiny sway appearing in your footage.
