About this deal

Whilst Sky+ is accepted as the Daddy in the digital recording arena, can Humax offer a subscription free alternative? In all very simple, so far very reliable except in poorest weather but that is mainly down to my aerial. One annoying thing with it is that it needs about 4 button-pushes to get the list of recorded material. There's also an RS232 port designated for firmware updates (which we can pretty much guarantee will never be used).

Well my Sony VTX800 Digibox did, although it was a minijack and I just used a 3mm to RCA converter to get the sound into the stereo. The only downside has been learning to use the Humax, which isn't as simple to operate as the Thomson. Note the 9150 does not have a modulator, so viewing its output on a second TV will need extra equipment. We did this, and the result was unacceptable picture quality (I can't say if this would have fixed the recording problems). This remote is a like-for-like replacement of the branded original, and one of the many hundreds of thousands of original remotes we've sold across the UK since 2006!

He has been a technology journalist since 2008 and has covered the rise of Android and reviewed just about every important device along the way. The interface is reasonably straightforward, although the design of the remote control is poor, with no real thought behind the button layout and several frequently used controls hidden beneath a sliding cover. Having said that I have bought a second Humax for myself to have in another room to record freeview etc so that I can watch something else when the football's on. It does, however, give you access to a range of additional functions, such as picture-in-picture, bookmarking and parental controls all of which round out a decent package.Basic instructions come in a printed leaflet but to find out about the full range of facilities, you need to browse the extensive manual which comes on a CD. A popular boast of Sky users, you can also opt to series programmes as well as record broken programmes, i.

My Humax PVR 9150T has been fantastic, but recently I have been having problems with it's recordings. Slow loading of EPG; it did take perhaps an hour after installation to populate the 8-day EPG for 40+ channels. it's time Humax updated this model by replacing the serial port (how many home PCs with a serial port are still in use?I like to see a list of forthcoming programs for the night rather than having to scroll horizontally across each channel. This includes items that are defective in ways that render them difficult to use, items that require service or repair, or items missing essential components. Editable time skip buttons - as well as usual fast forward and rewind - so you can skip backwards or forwards with one touch (I have mine set to skip back by 15 seconds and forward by 1 minute). If you are not using one of it's tuners to watch digital telly it can happily record two things at the same time. However, from a usability point of view we have no complaints about the Humax PVR-9150T, reaffirming the reputation the company deserves.

So, hopefully the problems are all associated with a dodgy software update which will be sorted at some stage (soon please Humax). The machine is pretty user-friendly so even confirmed technophobes will feel quite at home with its operating logic, after learning its foibles. and it would suddenly wake up and work, but if you did not press any buttons for about 15 mins, it went to sleep again and you had to start pressing again. There's only 4 screws on the back of the Humax holding the cover on then another 4 screws holding the HD cradle in place, then another 4 screws holding the HD to the cradle. We tried upgrading the firmware which sorted the freezing problem, but sadly not the dodgy recording. If you use the Freeview+ 8-day option on the TUTV PVRs then this is the same as that used by the Humax so will have the same characteristics. Seriously though, cheers for this, and yes I have the requisite piles of phono leads to dig one out from! The Humax is a lot less complicated to use than the much more expensive all-singing-all-dancing combined DVD/PVR alternatives - some of which only have single-channel receivers.
